Ellen Ellen bo Bellen

So. Blogger had a hiccup. A purty big one. Sorry I wasn't here yesterday to show you more cool vegan media! It was a sad day for all.

BUT NO MATTER! Let's say hi to Ellen.

Hi Ellen! You rock for being a thoughtful eater. You're extra super cool for having read Diet for a New America by John Robbins, it being one of the first explorations of meat-eating and its effect on the planet (it also contains the single most horrific depiction of animals in factory farms that I've ever seen it print....oi). Ellen, you rock for having had a vegan wedding. Your wife is pretty. And, you rock for forcing yourself to watch Earthlings. It is horrible (see comments below for more, um, comments).

I love how she describes that meat-eating comes down to a disconnect between people and the reality of making food. "I decided it was more important to taste the cheese burger. It was easier."

THANK YOU ELLEN FOR USING YOUR FAME TO BRING VEGANISM TO LIGHT!

  1. Ok, I understand why you did it. But I feel the dire need to protest.

I emplore you to take any link to 'Earthlings' down from your site. It doesn't need the clicks. Shaun Monson doesn't need the clicks. Flat out, I wish everyone would shun those assholes and wait for them to go away.

Because that movie doesn't help anyone or anything. You're not a better or a stronger person from watching it. You're not even reaffirmed in whatever beliefs you have (either way towards or against veganism/carnivorism). In my humble opinion that movie is the same as crazed Righty Pro-Lifers standing on the street waving pictures of bloodly lifeless fetuses and spewing hatred at passers-by. It's simply social terrorism. And I don't even pretend to know it's cause, design, or intention.

Sure, people need to know about the dark side of eating meat, human consumption, etc. They sure as hell need to think about what they purchase, contribute to, eat, and do more in general and a lot of people and big companies need serious change to curb their impact in our environment (or even, frankly, just to sleep better at night).

But I never needed to know what a puppie's head looks like crushed under a man's boot to live consciously when it comes to the way my lifestyle impacts animals, nature, my environment or Mother Earth. And I don't think anyone else does either.

I'll end this tangent by saying that thinking I was doing a good deed by watching this flick--ten minutes in I was physically ill and super pissed. Looking up the director/most of the development team will make you see even more red.

  2. I'm with ya there.

I had a bit of a back-and-forth with myself about even mentioning Earthlings, since it does seem to drip with Michael-Moore-style emotional propaganda and is, in general, really a big stain on the vegan movement (ie: you should feel REALLY bad about this and now we're forcing you to change). I added the link and then deleted it then added it again, and I still am not sure which is better, because I don't want to detract from Ellen's message by making one of her "this changed me" things inaccessible.

But I think I'll take it down again. I suppose if people want to check it out they can Google it.

    Thanks Lace!
